Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program -Frequently Asked Questions

 1. Do I have to attend the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program?

The students who do not meet the language requirement for their faculties have to attend the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program. The students who have a required score in an international exam (TOEFL iBT & PTE Academic) recognised by their departments can be exempt from the Preparatory Program. 2. Can I take a leave of absence during the Preparatory Program?

You can take a leave of absence for the whole academic year at the Preparatory Program.  You can find detailed information under Section 4 Article 12 of ITU Preparatory School Regulation.

3. Can I be exempt from the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program if I take the ITU SFL Proficiency Exam?

SUNY students cannot be exempt from the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program by submitting their score in the ITU School of Foreign Languages (SFL) Proficiency Exam. As the students are going to study in the USA as part of their undergraduate education, they are required to take the internationally recognized TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic (for some departments) exams.

The students of Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction can take the ITU SFL Proficiency Exam to be exempt from the Preparatory Program.

4. Do I have to take the ITU SFL Placement Exam?

We recommend you take the Placement Exam. The result of the exam helps us place you into the appropriate level in the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program.

5. Is attendance compulsory in the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program?

Yes, attendance is compulsory in the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program.

6. What are the consequences of not attending classes in the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program?

The students who fail due to absenteeism cannot attend classes in the Preparatory Program.

7. What are the consequences of failing the in-year exams in the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program?

In order to be successful in the Preparatory Program, students must have a semester average of at least 50 percent. The students who fail to achieve this average are considered unsuccessful in the Preparatory Program.

8. Is Summer School compulsory in the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program?

No, it is not.

9. How can I register for TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic exams?

In order to register for TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic exams, you are required to open an account on the exam websites. After opening an account, you can register for the exam by choosing the exam venue, day and time.

10. Can I take TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic exams anywhere in Turkey?

The score reports of TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic exams taken in Turkey will be accepted only on condition that the test center is administered by a public university. Score reports from other test centers will not be accepted. This condition does not apply to score reports of TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic exams taken abroad.  

11. What should I do after I obtain the required score from TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic exam?

After obtaining the required score, you need to get your score report approved by the DDP Coordination Office. To get approval, you can email your score report to DDP Coordination Office by stating your student number, TOEFL iBT user name and password, or you can create a Help Ticket at İTÜ YARDIM. After your score report is checked and approved, it is sent to ITU Registrar’s Office.  

12. What should I do if I cannot obtain the required score from TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic in the first year of the Preparatory Program?

You have the right to study in the Preparatory Program for two years. The first year of education is compulsory. If they wish, the students who cannot obtain the required score at the end of the first year can continue their education in the Preparatory Program by renewing their registration in the second year. If they choose not to register in the program in the second year, they can prepare for the exam themselves.  

13. I am in my second year at the Preparatory Program. What if I cannot get the required score from TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic exam at the end of this year?

Maximum period of study at the Preparatory Program is 2 years, in accordance with the law. The students in their second year at the program are required to submit their exam reports until the end of the Summer school period. The students who cannot obtain the required score within the specified period lose their student status at ITU and have the right to transfer to another university. For further information on how to transfer to another university, you should apply to ITU Registrar’s Office.

15. Where and when must the tuition fee for the Dual Diploma Language Preparatory Program be deposited?

You can deposit the tuition fee in the relevant bank within the dates specified in the Academic Calendar, stating your student number to the bank.
