Why French?

  • It is spoken by more than 200 million people in 43 countries in 5 continents.
  • It is the international language of culinary culture, fashion, personal automobile products, architecture, art, theater, and dance.
  • It is the official language of the United Nations.
  • It is the second language of the Internet.
  • It is the official language of the European Union which is one of the largest commercial blocks of the world.
  • It is used as a second language in Canada together with English.
  • It is the official language of trade and business life in more than 25 African countries.
  • Around 40% to 50% of English words are of French origin.
  • France is one of the most important tourism centers of the world.

Apart from assisting the students in developing their language skills, our program aims at:

  • creating a learner-centered learning environment,
  • helping students acquire higher-order thinking skills,,
  • helping students gain cultural awareness,
  • helping students gain tasteful knowledge based on effective learning, not memorization,
  • activating four basic language skills (listening-speaking-reading-writing) by the help of the communicative approach.


General Information

The six-semester Elective French Language Courses have an intermediate exit level (B1) for students registered at all the faculties and/or schools of our university.

FRA 101 is for beginners. Therefore, students who will register for the first time are kindly requested to enroll in FRA 101. FRA 102, 201, 202 and 301 are not suitable for beginners. Students who think that they have knowledge of French and it would be appropriate to enroll in one of these courses should contact one of the instructors.

Registrations are made through the Registrar’s Office.
